Solving Real Life Problems through Developer Student Clubs

Developer Student Clubs (DSC) is a global program by Google; training student developers to solve real-life problems. It is a program for University students that aims to help bridge the gap between theory and practice through understanding and using technology in a beginner-friendly environment.

It is a Google community which is designed to assist students develop their technology, innovative and web developing skills, spearheaded by the leads that Google chose in different universities. It is also a place to hone collaborative skills and develop solutions for real-world problems.

Being in operation for three years now, this program that started way back 2017 has expanded within and across continents. It is being currently implemented in 68 countries, some of which are Ghana, India, Pakistan and the Philippines.

For Southeast Asia, it is recorded as of November 8, 2020 that 162 DSC leads are present, to which University of Science and Technology of southern Philippines (USTP) is one among. With this, “We are also helping to achieve the University’s vision (A nationally recognized Science and Technology university providing vital link between education and the economy)” as stated by Ms. Hannah Hormiguera; the USTP-DSC lead in the info session held November 7, 2020.



“Connect, Learn and Grow” were emphasized as the three keys to achieve the club’s vision and mission. With being said, we should connect by joining in the club, learn about a wide range of technical topics, and grow by applying all our learnings and connections to build great solutions for local problems, advance skills and give back to the community.

Shad Roi de la Cruz, a Developer Community Manager of Google was also present to share his time about growing and living with technology, inspiring other people to be who they are, and join organizations that will develop you holistically. Mr. de la Cruz also said that it is beneficial to pursue a tech-related career path. “You stay up to date, by how the world is changing, make the process easier for everyone, and generate solutions faster in solving these problems that we have”, he said.



Developer Student Clubs (DSC) is now accredited in USTP, it gives the students the chance to partake in the club’s activities. It is open to any student, ranging from novice developers who are just starting, to advanced developers who want to further their skills. Students will build their networks, collaborate with other people across, and develop technology skills and make solutions to real-life problems.
