YAKA: A Platform for Self Expression

By Jeremy Licayan

It was an initiative of the Federation of Accredited Extra Curricular Organization (FAESO) to inaugurate a small group that will serve as an avenue for hearing student's self expression through the medium of music, poetry, and the like. YAKA is a Cebuano term meaning "sit down low". It was in the late afternoon of December 12, 2018 held at the open grounds in front of the Science Complex, where the first YAKA activity has started. It was headed by chosen committee of the FAESO, a creative start behind Jennifer Pauline Lim, Farah Mae Acebo, and the rest of the team.

This continuous activity was also taken part by the Peer Group Society, an organization who is also an advocate for student's mental health awareness and emotional apprehension through counseling and advising.

YAKA aims to listen to student's agony, dilemma, and any educational-related problems and provide atmosphere of belongingness and deeper sense of self understanding. This continuous activity will let students from different colleges to anticipate to both positive and negative situations in the realms of academics and the outside world. Participants have enjoyed the short and chummy activity coupled with the open ground alfresco and sedative genres of music performed by any of the participants. They were also given an inspirational talk from Mr. Jerwin Borres, FAESO Moderator, and have gained insights from inspiring and real stories of some participants who openly shared their life experiences.

YAKA have gained compliments and the committee together with the Peer Group Society was planning to continuously extend a better platform for student's self expression. Indeed, YAKA is a home away from campus rooms.
